Britney Jean Spears was born on 2nd of December 1981 in McComb, Mississippi. She’s the middle one of the three children of Lynne Irene Bridges and James Parnell Spears. Her maternal grandmother was English and one her maternal great-great-grandfather was Maltese. She was raised in Kentwood, Louisiana. Already at the young age of three, Britney started attending dance classes and performed as a solo artist at the annual recital in her hometown. She also learnt gymnastics and received voice lessons. Her talent and hard work led her to winning many state-level competitions, as well as children’s talent shows. As she said in the interviews, she was a “weird child”. She acknowledges, that she knew very early on what she was supposed to do in life.

Mickey Mouse Club

When Britney was eight, she travelled with her mother to Atlanta, Georgia for an audition in revival of The Mickey Mouse Club. She was rejected due to being too young but the casting director introduced her to a New York City talent agent. Shortly after, she moved with her mother and sister to New York and she was hired as the understudy for the lead role of Tina Denmark in the Off-Broadway musical “Ruthless!” When she was eleven, she was finally picked for the cast in The All-New Mickey Mouse Club along with Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, and Keri Russell. She is very fond of her memories from this phase of her life.

After the show was cancelled in 1996, Britney focused on her solo career. Whilst she was trying to join the female pop group Innosense, her mother submitted a recording of Britney singing over a Whitney Houston song to a family friend and entertainment lawyer, who pitched her to record labels. Just a few weeks later, Spears was invited to sing for the Jive Records executives and was signed to the label. In 1998 she released her first single, “…Baby One More Time”, which reached very quickly the top of the pop charts in fifteen countries.

Her career skyrocketed. For three consecutive years she released albums, that broke sales records. In 2000 her first book “Heart to Heart”, co-written with her mother, was published. The book was followed by two more, “A Mother’s Gift” (2001) and “Stages” (2002). In 2002, she starred in the film “Crossroads”. She also acted in 4 other films between 2001 and 2004. She developed and endorsed a number of products, including video games, fragrances and clothing.

Mental Issues

In 2004 Britney married her childhood friend, Jason Alexander in Las Vegas. The marriage was annulled two days later. She then started a relationship with backup dancer Kevin Federline, whose girlfriend was pregnant with their second child. Britney required a knee operation following an injury, which forced her to cancel the final part of her tour. She married Kevin Federline; soon they welcomed their first child. In 2006 she was caught on cameras driving with her 2 years old son on her lap. The same year the couple’s second son was born. Just two months later, Spears filed for divorce.

After the separation, she started to frequent the club scene; checked in and out of rehabilitation. She made the headlines yet again, this time round for shaving her head, an incident followed by a stay in a treatment centre. She found herself in the midst of a legal battle over the custody of her sons. Just as she seemed to be recovering, she experienced yet another breakdown n 2008. Her mother suspected that Britney suffered from postpartum depression, whilst other rumours have it, that she had bipolar disorder. Eventually her ex-husband won the full custody of the two boys. Spears parents involved in a power struggle with her manager, who they believed was a bad influence in her life; her father obtained temporary, and later, permanent conservatorship.


Already in the summer of 2008, Britney brought home three awards from the MTV Video Music Award, for the single “Piece of Me”. Before this, she appeared as guest on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”, which was very well received. It seems that the storm was over and the superstar settled down. She started to release very strong albums again, year after year. She also became one of judges in the second season of The X-Factor. In 2013 Britney started her residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, which will be developed in to a world tour. Yet again, Britney Spears proved to the world, and to herself, that how much she is capable of. She recovered and rose higher than before.
